Wierd problem - SBS2003 Premium as the only DC and forwarding DNS queries to
our ISP as recommended. Generally no problems browsing either from the server
or from any of the clients. However for the last week or so, some of the
Microsoft URLs don't get resolved. www.microsoft.com always fails and
update.microsoft.com sometimes fails, however support.microsoft.com gets a
response. Here's a section from the DNS log:

08:36:47 1570 PACKET UDP Rcv 10.10.10.128 0471 Q [0001 D NOERROR]
(3)www(9)microsoft(3)com(0)

08:36:47 1570 PACKET UDP Snd 212.74.114.129 0872 Q [0001 D NOERROR]
(3)www(9)microsoft(3)com(0)

08:36:48 1570 PACKET UDP Rcv 10.10.10.128 0471 Q [0001 D NOERROR]
(3)www(9)microsoft(3)com(0)

08:36:49 1570 PACKET UDP Rcv 10.10.10.128 0471 Q [0001 D NOERROR]
(3)www(9)microsoft(3)com(0)

08:36:51 1570 PACKET UDP Rcv 10.10.10.128 0471 Q [0001 D NOERROR]
(3)www(9)microsoft(3)com(0)

08:36:53 15BC PACKET UDP Snd 10.10.10.128 0471 R Q [8281 DR SERVFAIL]
(3)www(9)microsoft(3)com(0)

You can see that it receives and forwards the query from the client but
appears to get nothing back. You'd think it was an ISP issue but if you point
any of the clients direct at the ISP's DNS, it works fine. The problem is the
same if I forward to another ISP's DNS servers.

I've cleared the DNS cache and even uninstalled and reinstalled DNS but the
problem persists.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Have you tried just clearing the DNS forwarder list? Leaving it empty will
cause the server to use root hints to find addresses.

Thanks, Matt

Yes I have tried this and it does work.

I guess I'm really trying to find out why it stopped working with forwarders.

Off the top of my head, I'd say either EDNS0 problems with your ISP (Which
is why the clients would work), or just strange DNS servers at your ISP.
